09 — FAQ

Home care questions from Alberta families

Can’t find your answer? Call (403) 471-1237 or see the full FAQ.

What is Client-Directed Home Care (CDHCI) in Alberta?

CDHCI lets Albertans assessed by an AHS Case Manager choose their own home care agency from the Alberta Blue Cross registered list. The agency bills Alberta Blue Cross directly for authorized hours. You need a valid Alberta health card and must live in a community setting.

Do you provide home care in Edmonton?

Yes. We have clients in Edmonton today and caregivers who live in the Edmonton area. We offer private-pay care and accept CDHCI clients whose hours are authorized by their home care case manager. See home care in Edmonton.

Do you serve all of Alberta?

We serve Calgary and Edmonton and their surrounding areas, and arrange care elsewhere in Alberta when we can match a qualified caregiver nearby. Call (403) 471-1237 to check your town.

How much does in-home senior care cost in Alberta?

Our standard private-pay rate is CAD $35.03 per hour; specialized care is quoted after a free assessment. If you qualify for AHS CDHCI, authorized hours are billed to Alberta Blue Cross. Under AHS rules, you pay for hours beyond your authorization or above the program’s maximum hourly rate, and we explain any difference before care starts.

Do you have Mandarin- or Cantonese-speaking caregivers?

Yes. We match clients with caregivers who speak Mandarin, Cantonese, French or English, in Calgary, Edmonton and Metro Vancouver.

Do you provide home care in British Columbia?

Yes. We offer private-pay home care in Metro Vancouver, including Vancouver, Richmond and Burnaby. Care can start now.

Are your caregivers screened?

Every caregiver passes a criminal record and vulnerable sector check, holds an HCA certificate and first aid/CPR, and is trained before their first shift.

Is care available nights, weekends and holidays?

Yes. Care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including overnight and live-in support.

Can veterans use Pinnacle Age Well?

Yes. We provide home care for veterans eligible for the Veterans Independence Program through Veterans Affairs Canada.

How quickly can home care start?

Private-pay care can usually start within 24–48 hours of your call. CDHCI care starts once your AHS Case Manager has authorized your hours.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

Not for private-pay care. For funded care under CDHCI, you need an assessment by an AHS Case Manager. You can contact home care intake yourself: in Calgary call 403-943-1920; in Edmonton and the rest of Alberta call Health Link at 811.

What is the difference between AHS home care and CDHCI?

With standard AHS home care, AHS arranges the provider. With CDHCI, you choose a registered agency yourself and take on directing and monitoring your care. The agency then bills Alberta Blue Cross for your authorized hours.

What does CDHCI cover?

Help with personal hygiene, dressing, toileting, mobility, medication support and respiratory care, plus health-related homemaking such as bathroom cleaning and laundry, and respite where appropriate. Check your eligibility.
